Home emergency cover
Covers emergency callouts and services from tradespeople, like plumbers, electricians.
Tesco Insurance scores 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from around 26,000 reviews and is a Which? Recommended Provider for home insurance, although the Trustpilot score covers its wider insurance range.
It offers buildings, contents and combined cover, with contents limits of £50,000, £75,000 or £100,000, and several optional extras. Clubcard members receive a discount, including 5% automatically applied at renewal.
Tesco Underwriting accepted 65-70%[2] of buildings-only claims and 90-95%[2] of contents-only claims in 2024. These are underwriter-wide figures from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), rather than Tesco-branded policy results alone.
Yes, Tesco offers standalone contents insurance and combined buildings and contents cover. There aren’t named cover tiers - instead, customers can choose a contents limit of £50,000, £75,000 or £100,000, depending on the value of their belongings.
Standard cover includes valuable items kept at home, accidental damage to televisions, tablets and laptops, up to £10,000 for home office equipment and protection for garden belongings. You can add extended accidental damage, personal possessions, bicycle cover and Family Legal Guard for an additional premium.
All Tesco contents and buildings home insurance policies include some cover for damage and loss caused by the following events:
Stolen items and break-in damage
Ground movement causing structural damage
Fire, smoke, lightning and explosion damage
Temporary housing if your home can't be lived in
Leaks from pipes, tanks and appliances
Wind, rain, snow and flood damage
Finding the cause of escaped water and fixing resulting damage
Covers emergency callouts and services from tradespeople, like plumbers, electricians.
Covers legal costs for issues like conveyancing, probate, and disputes with neighbours.
This is for illustrative purposes only. If your circumstances and cover needs differ, your quote may be more or less expensive than the above example.

Tesco offers buildings, contents or combined cover rather than named tiers, with protection against risks such as fire, flood, storm damage, theft and subsidence. Policies also include alternative accommodation if your home becomes uninhabitable after an insured event.
Buildings insurance covers the structure, fixtures and fittings, while contents insurance protects belongings inside your home. Some policies include limited accidental damage for specific items, such as fixed glass or sanitary ware, depending on the level of cover you take out.
You can customise your policy with add-ons such as extended accidental damage, personal possessions cover, bicycle cover, Home Emergency Cover and Family Legal Guard. These extras can extend protection to mishaps at home, belongings taken outside, emergency repairs and legal expenses.
Tesco’s add-ons may be worthwhile for certain circumstances. Extended accidental damage may suit homes with children or pets, while personal possessions and bicycle cover can be useful if you regularly carry expensive items or cycle away from home.
Home Emergency offers useful reassurance if you're worried about urgent plumbing, electrical or heating problems. However, it doesn’t cover general maintenance, wear and tear, pre-existing faults or breakdowns of appliances such as washing machines and fridges.
You should avoid adding every optional extra automatically - bicycles are already covered within the home under contents insurance, for example, so the separate add-on is mainly for protection while you’re out. Compare each extra’s cost, excess and limits with any protection provided by warranties, packaged bank accounts or other policies before buying.
Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Tesco home insurance to help you make your decision:
Tesco is a Which? Recommended Provider, with a claims score of 76%[4] - second among the 24 brands rated
Tesco Underwriting accepted 85-90%[2] of contents-only claims in 2024
Clubcard members can receive a discounted quote, while a 5% Clubcard discount is automatically applied at renewal
Tesco was one of a minority of policies assessed by Which? that covered both rapid and gradual groundwater flooding under buildings and contents insurance

Tesco’s policy cover was broadly mid-table, receiving 71%[4] for buildings and 70%[4] for contents from Which?
Its FCA claims figures varied significantly by policy type - Tesco Underwriting accepted 85-90%[2] of contents claims, but only 60-65%[2] of buildings-only claims
Damage caused by domestic pets isn’t covered under the standard contents policy, even though some other forms of accidental damage are included
Storm damage to fences, gates, hedges and fixed outdoor items such as hot tubs is excluded
Personal possessions cover is optional, and there is a £2,000 single-item limit for belongings protected away from home

Alongside home insurance, Tesco offers a number of other insurance and money products:
Tesco home insurance is arranged and administered by Tesco Insurance and underwritten by Tesco Underwriting Limited. Home Emergency Cover is underwritten separately by Inter Partner Assistance S.A.
Yes, Tesco allows customers to pay through monthly Direct Debit instalments under a credit agreement, or pay for the policy annually. Customers paying monthly should check the total amount repayable in their quote, rather than comparing the instalment amount alone.
Cancelling the Direct Debit doesn’t cancel the insurance, and if you make a claim, the full annual premium remains due even if you later end the policy.
Yes, Tesco buildings insurance covers subsidence or heave beneath the property, as well as landslip. Contents insurance can also cover belongings damaged by these events.
Exclusions include normal settlement, coastal erosion, faulty design or workmanship and damage arising from demolition or structural alterations. Some outdoor structures are only covered when the main home is damaged at the same time.
Home Emergency Cover is an optional extra for homeowners, with Essentials and Full levels available. Both include 24-hour assistance for plumbing, drainage, electrical and security emergencies, while Full cover adds heating breakdowns and pest infestations.
Both levels provide up to £1,000 per callout, unlimited callouts and no excess. Boiler cover is intended for complete breakdowns rather than maintenance or minor faults, and restrictions apply according to the boiler’s age, condition and type.
Belongings away from home aren’t included automatically, but you can add Personal Possessions Cover. It protects items including jewellery, laptops, phones, money and portable home-office equipment against theft, accidental loss and damage anywhere in the UK.
It also provides cover abroad for up to 60 days in total during each policy year. Higher-value items and bicycles may need to be listed separately under specified-item or bicycle cover.
Yes, buildings insurance covers the home, garages and domestic outbuildings, while contents insurance protects belongings kept in the house, garage, shed and garden. Tesco provides unlimited buildings cover for eligible repairs or rebuilding, including insured outbuildings.
Contents left outside within the property boundary can be covered, although money and valuables are excluded from this section. Storm or flood damage to gates, hedges and fences isn’t covered, and individual limits or security conditions may apply to belongings kept in sheds or garages.
Tesco doesn’t apply one universal amount. Your Policy Schedule lists the excess for each claim type, which can include:
A compulsory buildings or contents excess
Any voluntary excess you chose
Higher excesses for claims such as escape of water or subsidence
Separate excesses for optional personal possessions, bicycle or specified-item cover
The compulsory and voluntary amounts are added together. If you claim under both buildings and contents for the same incident, Tesco deducts all applicable excesses under both sections, while Home Emergency Cover has no excess.
